Editorial Planeta Ediciones Generales
Editorial Planeta, founded in 1949 by José Manuel Lara Hernández, was the seed of Grupo Planeta, around which publishing houses and cultural, audiovisual, and communication companies were incorporated.
Editorial Planeta, a leader and reference in the Spanish-speaking world, publishes works by Spanish and foreign authors aimed at a wide audience looking for a reading experience that combines quality and success. Its catalog includes nearly two thousand authors and covers all literary genres: novels (adventure, historical, detective, humorous, and thrillers); political and historical essays; biographies and memoirs of contemporary figures, as well as practical and self-help books.
Since 1952, it has held the Planeta Prize, the most recognized and prestigious literary award in Spain. This annual event transcends the literary world, placing the award ceremony, held every October 15th, at the heart of cultural and social news. Among its winners are Nobel laureates Camilo José Cela and Mario Vargas Llosa, as well as prominent figures in 20th-century Spanish literature, such as Ana María Matute, Ramón J. Sender, José María Gironella, Mercedes Salisachs, Gonzalo Torrente Ballester, Jorge Semprún, Francisco Umbral, Antonio Gala, and Terenci Moix, among others. The prize has also launched authors who became widely known, including Juan Marsé, Soledad Puértolas, Antonio Muñoz Molina, Carmen Posadas, Rosa Regàs, Fernando Savater, and Eduardo Mendoza.
Editorial Planeta also supports other significant awards, such as the Fernando Lara Novel Prize, in memory of the company's former CEO, who passed away in 1995, established in partnership with the José Manuel Lara Foundation since 1996. The Azorín Prize, awarded since 1994 in Alicante, is another prominent award it organizes.
Editorial Planeta’s books are generally well-received by readers, often appearing on bestseller lists, as seen with La sombra del viento by Carlos Ruiz Zafón, which has surpassed one hundred editions in Spanish, or international bestsellers by authors like Christian Jacq and Dan Brown.
