In 1996 the Fernando Lara Novel Prize was awarded for the first time. The award is named after the youngest son of José Manuel Lara Hernández, who was CEO of Grupo Planeta until his death in August 1995. The prize value was set at twenty million pesetas and the first edition achieved a high level of participation, with 340 novels presented.
